A Fund for Jennie: An Auction

Jennie Collage

Something happened recently that reminded me how important it is to hug my family every chance I get, to tell them that I love them and to memorize the sounds of their voices, their mannerisms, their laughs . As many in the food blogging community know by now, Jennifer Perillo of the popular blog In Jennie’s Kitchen suffered a terrible loss a few weeks ago. Mikey, her beloved husband and father to their two young girls, died from a massive heart attack. Just like that. One moment he was helping his daughter, Isabella, ride her bike and the next moment he sat on the grass and was gone, leaving behind the people he would never dream of abandoning.

As the news spread through the food blogging world, people began to put messages out on Twitter and Facebook, asking Jennie how they could help. She responded by asking people to make Mikey’s favorite peanut butter pie and to share it with the people they loved, as she never had the chance to share it with him one last time. The blogging world exploded with peanut butter pies and stories of families honoring Mikey and their own bonds.

Then along came Shauna, spearheading a project called A Fund for Jennie (or #afundforjennie, as it’s known on Twitter). With the help of Maggy and Erika, the founders of the non-profit group, Bloggers Without Borders, she is raising funds for Jennie and her girls. Bloggers have come out of the woodwork, offering up photography, baked treats, workshops and more as auction items to help the fund. Be sure to check out the Auction Gallery Page to see what is being offered.

If you would like to help Jennie and her two girls, here are two options (one of them involves some very cool kitchen tools).

Donate directly:

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “I’d really like to help, but money’s a little tight right now” or “I already have those kitchen items. I really don’t need another set.” First of all, you don’t have to bid on these items to help Jennie and her girls. ┬áDonations of ANY amount are appreciated and welcomed at the Bloggers without Border PayPal account. Head to their site to make a donation.

For those who are worried about an overflow of kitchen appliances and gadgets (believe me, I know how that goes), keep in mind that the holidays are just a few months away. Maybe there are a couple of people on your list who would love these items, not to mention the gratifying feeling when they find out that the purchase of their gift helped Jennie and her girls.

Auction package:

I am giving away two items (auctioned together) that should be in every kitchen. They are both made by OXO Good Grips, the company that brings you your favorite tongs, peelers and measuring cups (well, at least the are my favorites).

The first is the steel Chef’s Mandoline Slicer, which cuts vegetables and fruits in straight, serrated and wavy slices, in varying thicknesses. This is great for French fries, carrot sticks, cucumber salads…the list goes on. The value of the slicer is approximately $100.

The second items is OXO’s Stainless Food Scale with Pull-Out Display. I received this scale as a gift a couple of years ago, never thinking I’d find any uses for it. Was I ever wrong! I use this to measure baking ingredients, potatoes and small amounts of bagged items. The digital display is easy to read and can be adjusted to metric or imperial measurements. The value is approximately $50.

The grand total value of the package (slicer plus scale) is approximately $150. Let’s start the bidding off at $100, which is a smoking deal for these two items!. Enter your bid into the comments section below.

The auction will be open until Tuesday, September 6th at 5pm PST. At that time, I will email the highest bidder, and arrange for your donation and the shipment of the OXO products. Unfortunately, the OXO items can only be shipped within the U.S. If you live outside of the U.S., please consider donating money using the button above.

Now let’s get that bidding started. Thanks so much to all of you.
