Recipes for Fall: Tailgating and Comfort Food

Fall Collage 1: Tailgating Comfort Food Recipe

As I mentioned in my last post, Roasted Tomatillo Salsa Verde, I have a thing for fall and everything it brings, from comfort food to tailgating grub. While I am not quite ready for the chill of winter, I relish the feeling of my husband pulling the extra blanket over top of us in the middle of the night. Most mornings, we sit outside drinking our cups of coffee and tea, steam curling from the hot liquids as we wrap our hands around the mugs to keep our fingers warm. We watch the hummingbirds whiz back and forth between the feeder and the trumpet vine, dodging each other at top speed. This morning, as the clouds of the impending thunderstorm rolled over the mountains, we had one lone hummingbird visitor. We felt certain he came to say good-bye on behalf of his brothers and sisters before embarking on the long journey south.

As a celebration of our summer – traveling adventures, days at the pool and bike rides to the park – we cooked up a backyard barbecue feast that included some of our favorites. Grilled Tri-Tip Steak with Molasses Chili Marinade was the star of the show, with a blue potato salad, fresh corn and sweet watermelon acting as sidekicks. The only thing we were missing was a sugar cone filled with Almond Joy Chocolate & Coconut Ice Cream.

As we move into fall, I have my mind on other dishes. Easy comfort foods, such as soups and sandwiches, and tailgating food, from dips to quesadillas, rule the menu. I would love to hear about your favorite comfort food and tailgating recipes. So, if you feel so inclined, feel free to leave a link or recipe in the comments section.

Oh dear, is it fall already? I’m not even tan yet….
Thankfully, fall produce and recipes will help ease the transition. Thanks for the list!

Becca, the tan never happened for me either, but this gorgeous fall weather is easing that disappointment.

Fall! Did you say Fall? I can’t believe it is fall somewhere in the world already!
I’m going to give that Greek Turkey Meatball Sandwich a try (it has my son’s name on it) anyway, even if it won’t be fall here until oh… Thanksgiving time!

I can imagine that things are still steamy in Arizona. You’ll have to visit Utah again for a little taste of the cool weather.

Fall is bittersweet for me. I look forward to the comfort foods, the cool crisp air, and snuggling with a blanket and a hot cup of tea; but I miss the fun of the summer, the heat, and the walks and hikes we go on.
This is a great recipe round up! For tailgating, or for lazy football Sunday’s, I recommend a pulled pork recipewe just posted though have used for years. It’s always a hit.

I hear you, Chris. I will some of those things about summer, too. This pulled pork sounds like the perfect fall dish!

We are all about the crockpot and the wonderful soups and stews for fall. There are just too many “comfort” foods for me to name. Well, maybe just one. . . .. . chili!

Dara, autumn is the best of the seasons as far as I’m concerned. I love living in a place with four very distinct seasons and all the beauty that they each bring. Weather, colours, activities and food. Your comfort food looks fantastic! I’d love to have some on the first Sunday of football season! Me? I always choose wings and mac and cheese. (my latest post is mac and cheese)

I am so with you Dara. Ready for a cool down, but not ready for the white sun. :) I have been yearning for total comfort food lately as well. I can’t wait to make soup, soup and more soup. My kids love Baked Potato Soup (http://www.farmgirlgourmet.com/2010/11/baked-potato-soup.html) and have already started begging for it. Not the best option when it’s 95 degrees, but that will change very soon. Thanks for sharing your wonderful recipes! You are amazing!

I know how you feel about the hummingbirds, I hate to see them go! It does signal the end of summer.

Tailgating is such fun food! Great ideas.

The summer season clings a bit longer in Los Angeles than most areas of the US. But I too am looking forward to the fall. Just the thought of driving around Los Angeles with the top down on one of those crisp blue days of autumn makes me love the big crazy city all the more. GREG
