Tomorrow is a big day for my husband (S). Though, to tell the truth, I’d be hard-pressed to say who is more nervous, him or me. He is set to run the Ogden Marathon (Utah). Now, this is not his first marathon; in fact, it’s his ninth. But there’s something different about this one. Despite the fact that we are both runners (see my half-marathon story), I’d bet my best chef’s knife (that’s saying alot – I have deep affection for my chef’s knives) that we will never run together. You see, the little speed demon’s marathon PR (that’s running lingo for “personal record”) is 2 hours 43 minutes. Yeah. As I was saying…never running together. So, what makes this marathon different for him?
When S first read about the USA Masters Championship Marathon (a bunch of really speedy men and women over the age of 40), a dream started to form in his mind. What if he could qualify for that race? The marathon is set to be held in October in Minnesota, in conjunction with the Twin Cities Marathon. In order to qualify, S has to run the marathon in…brace yourselves…2:40 or less, which means he has to average 6:04 per mile. For 26.2 miles. Insane! Did I mention that we’re never EVER running together?!
Shaving three-plus minutes off of a marathon time may not seem like a big deal. But when you’re already pretty fast, cutting back your time is really hard to do. So S set out on a mission to train harder and eat more healthfully than he ever has before. His diet is packed with whole grains, lean proteins and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Except for a couple of handfuls of his mum’s Christmas cookies around the holidays, he hasn’t consumed any desserts for about six months. (Believe me, when you’re on a weight loss journey like I was, it is very helpful to have a partner in crime in the eating arena.)
In addition to eating well, he increased the intensity of his training, adding in longer tempo runs (running at race pace), faster intervals (a variety of sprints) and a greater number of long runs (more Sunday morning 20 to 22-milers).
His dedication and gumption are nothing short of inspirational to me. He set a goal and put his heart and soul into attaining it. He knows there’s a chance he may not break 2:40, but he’s can feel satisfaction in knowing that he showed some serious chutzpah. On Saturday morning, whether you’re sipping your coffee or out for a run of your own, please send some good karma to S. My boys and I will be standing at the finish line, cheering our hearts out for him, regardless of how fast he runs. He is our hero!

Wow, that is a seriously fast pace! Wishing him luck, sounds like he is on track to achieve his goal!
Oh my goodness, good luck to your hubby!! Running a 2:40 time is INSANE! I’m running a marathon next weekend and am hoping for 3:30….2:40 isn’t even imaginable to me. Amazing!!
Thinking of you all and praying for your hubby. He’s FAST!
I can’t imagine running that fast to save my life. Wow. Good luck to him!!
Absolutely – best of luck to your husband. Amazingly, I ran 3 marathons, many years ago, and my fastest – ha – was over 4 hours!
Oh wow! My best marathon was a 4 hours 45 minutes and I was pretty darn proud of that one. Best of luck to your husband.
Wow, that is some major dedication your husband has! Good luck to S tomorrow on getting below 2:40! There is no way I will ever be able to run that fast EVER, so I am already very impressed!
Alas, shin splints ended my running years ago. Sending speedy thoughts his way!
6:04 per mile? I don’t think I could ever do that in just 1 mile alone! I hope he makes that 2:40 cutoff! If he doesn’t, he’s still an inspiration. I’m at 8:16 now but maybe someday I can bring it down to… 8 minutes
Whoa. He is a rock star! I can’t even imagine running that pace for HALF of a mile! 26?!? Fingers crossed for him!
I had to read that pace paragraph 3 times. What the what?! That’s amazing!! Can’t wait to hear!!
GO HUBBY!!!
So excited. It’s going to be a good day tomorrow. I can feel it. I’ll be pacing for you in the midwest!!
Wishing your hubby the best of luck! Thinking of you guys today!! GO, GO, GO!
Ah, good luck to your husband!!! Today!!
Hats off and all good wishes to him. How wonderful and impressive and inspiring. Sending green energy from the East Coast to the roadways of Ogden, Utah, to him and to his dedicated, loving team: Y’all!
I used to run 3-5 miles. That was always enough for me…I simply can not imagine a marathon! Cheers to you and your hubs for making a great team Dara!
I’m rooting for him! What an inspiration! How to lead his family by example.
It’s not Saturday morning anymore, but I hope it went really well and that S did an amazing job (how could he not?). I hope y’all had a great day!
wow amazing Dara! Hope your weekend is good. I am still laying low these days and sorry i have been so out of touch. I had no idea a family death would be this tough to deal with..
So how did he do? My friends ran the same marathon on Saturday. (We just live a couple hours south of Ogden.) She said it was a long course, so I’m just wondering.
Kelly, I hope the run went well for your friends. It was such a gorgeous day! I wrote a little update on my husband’s run in my recent post: http://www.cookincanuck.com/2012/05/southwestern-stuffed-mushrooms-recipe-with-black-beans-brown-rice-red-pepper/
I am seriously impressed. That is fast!! And all of the recipes look awesome.
I will send every ounce of good will for your darling husband. Both of you are such an inspiration to us all. The cooking, the running, the love you share – lots for us to learn.
