The message above encapsulates how so many of us feel.
We cannot possibly rationalize how this happened.
We cannot fathom the pain that the families of the victims feel today, and will feel for many days and years to come.
We cannot think of ways to heal their hearts and put patches on the gaping holes left in their lives.
So what can we do?
We can hug our children tightly and tell them that we love them.
We can thank our children's teachers and principals, for each day they are are charged not only with educating our children, but with nurturing their souls, guarding their fragile egos, patching up their wounds and keeping them safe.
We can carry out random acts of kindness for friends, neighbors and strangers.
We can vow to kiss and hug our children before sending them off to school, even if they ate their breakfast at a snail's pace or forgot to make their bed.
We can honor the courage of those teachers and administrators who set themselves in harm's way to protect the children of Sandy Hook Elementary School.
We can remember the victims and realize that each of every one of them had dreams and hopes, and that they were not just another name on a list.
May each of them rest in peace.

As an elementary school teacher, I am humbled by the heroic actions of those with whom I share my profession and passion for children. As a human being, my heart is broken for the loss of innocence, not only in the victims but also the survivors. Seeing those named candles brought tears to my eyes. We MUST take care to never forget the lessons from this terrible and senseless tragedy.
