Jamaican Meat Patties

These Jamaican meat patties are filled with richly flavored ground beef and covered in a flaky dough. Delicious!

Ingredients

The dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons curry powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup ½ stick unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup shortening
  • cup (+more) water

The dough:

  • In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, curry powder, and ½ teaspoon salt.
  • With a pastry cutter, or your fingers, cut in the butter and shortening until the mixture resembles a coarse meal.
  • Add the water and stir until the mixture forms into a bowl. If the dough is too crumbly, add more water, 1 teaspoon at a time, until the dough sticks together. Form the dough into a log. Cut the dough into 10 pieces.

The meat:

  • Set a large skillet over medium heat and melt 2 tablespoon butter. Add the diced onion and sauté until it is soft and translucent.
  • Add the ground beef. Add curry powder, dried thyme, salt, freshly ground pepper, ground allspice, ground cloves, and ground nutmeg. liquid is absorbed, remove the skillet from the heat.
  • Sauté until the meat is browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Stir in beef broth and bread crumbs. Once liquid is absorbed, remove the skillet from the heat.

Assemble & bake:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Take one piece of dough and roll out into a 6-inch circle. Fill with 2 tablespoons of the meat mixture. Fold the dough over and press the edges to seal. Use a fork to further seal. Repeat with the remaining pieces of dough.
  • Place the patties on a baking sheet. In a small bowl, whisk one egg.Brush the top of each patty with the beaten egg.
  • Bake for 30 minutes, or until the patties are golden brown. Serve with mango chutney, Pickapeppa sauce (from Jamaica, but available in North America), or any other sauce that appeals to you.
