New Year’s Eve Recipes: Appetizers, Hors D’Oeuvres & Cocktails

I never used to believe my parents when they told me that time starts to go faster as you get older. Now I know exactly what they were talking about. When I started to sift through all of the photos of 2011 for our annual family calendar and Christmas card, I realized that we had a full year, including our Alaskan Disney cruise, family hikes and forays into clay pigeon shooting. On the other hand, it feels like just a few weeks since we raised our bubbly glasses of Prosecco to ring in 2011. Now it’s time to pull out all of our favorite New Year’s Eve appetizer, hors d’oeuvres and cocktail recipes and stir up a bubbling pot of cheese fondue as we flip the calendar to 2012.

Our Christmas card photos this year.

The Christmas holidays were happily filled with family visiting from Canada, California and Oregon. It was so good to have everyone here but, I’ll be honest, we are now ready for a long winter’s nap. So, try as we might to stay up until midnight on New Year’s Eve, realistically we’ll be taking a few sips of bubbly, singing a line or two of Auld Lang Syne and falling face first into our pillows as soon as the ball drops in Times Square (that would be at 10pm our time). This is what happens when you turn forty, folks. Long gone are the long nights of dancing on the tables and indulging in kamikazes. Truth be told, it would take a least a week to recover from a night like that. Pathetic, I know.

So, I am counting on all of you to line up the cocktails, make plates and plates of appetizers to serve to your guests and trip the light fantastic until the wee hours. Here are several recipes to get you started. Happy New Year to all of you!
