Whip up this Passionfruit Vodka Cocktail in only five minutes and imagine that you're being whisked away on a tropical cruise. Thank you to Princess Cruises for helping me share this recipe with you.
Have you ever had POG? I first discovered it when I visited Hawaii as a kid. It was the first thing I tasted when I arrived and I proceeded to drink it at least twice a day when I wasn’t drinking virgin daiquiris. P for passionfruit juice, O for orange juice and G for guava juice. A magical combination.
When I tasted the Ultimate Cooler, one of Princess Cruises’ signature cocktails, on our 7-day cruise aboard the Ruby Princess to the Mexican Riviera last month (check out my Cruise Packing List: The Unexpected Items), I practically did a happy dance right there in the bar. It tasted just like POG, but even better because...well...there was vodka.
Lucky for me, the Ultimate Cooler was served in every bar and poolside all around the ship. It became a mid-afternoon ritual on our days at sea and a 5 o'clock kick-off to dinner hour on the shore excursion days. We nestled down in cozy chairs in the Crooners bar, sipping on our cocktails and speculating on whether we'd be indulging in steak or seafood (or both!) that night.
Yep, I drank one by this pool.
And another one during our afternoon lounging in the Sanctuary, the adults-only, reserved seating area at the aft end of the ship. We sat in these chairs for hours, reading books, chatting, indulging in high tea (the best finger sandwiches!) and sipping on sparkling water and cocktails. The definition of indulgence!
This recipe isn't an exact replica of Princess Cruises' Ultimate Cooler, but it's pretty darn close. The ship recipe includes watermelon syrup and passionfruit puree, but doesn't have guava juice. This passionfruit vodka cocktail is my version and come so close to the original that I can imagine myself sinking into a poolside lounge chair with just one sip.
I was able to find both passionfruit and guava juices at a local specialty store. A family friend introduced me to Ceres juices years ago, and they are always my first juice for tropical juices. They can be found in many stores in the U.S. and Canada, but can also be bought online.

Guava juice is my favorite! (My dad was from Hawaii, so I grew up on guava juice and jam.) I cannot wait to try it mixed in this cocktail!
