Memorial Day is upon us and, in the United States, that means eager barbecue fanatics are scrubbing down their grills, checking their supply of spices and herbs, and wielding their tongs while donning their red-checked aprons. I can already hear the caveman grunts and the bellows for brewskies. I really need to learn to control myself. Okay, I may not actually bellow, but I certainly do enjoy standing in the sun, sipping on a good beer out of a frosted mug while tending the grill. The frosted mug is an absolute “must” in our house. We have seven or eight mugs in the freezer at all time, in preparation for guests spontaneously arriving on our doorstep. We never actually have surprise guests, but we like to pretend that we live in a Food Network show where that may happen.
Growing up in Canada, the unofficial start of the grilling season was Victoria Day, a statutory holiday recognized in honor of Queen Victoria’s birthday, which occurs on the last Monday of May before May 25th. As in the anticipation of Memorial Day in the United States, Canadian barbecue afficianados start dreaming up preparations of beef, pork, chicken and vegetables, as well as pasta salads, beverages and desserts to accompany the smoky entrees.
Last year I put together a Best of…Grilling and Summer Barbecue Recipes. Be sure to check that out for some fantastic ideas. Since there were so many recipes from other bloggers around the web (and Cookin’ Canuck) that were posted since last year’s list, I decided it was time for an update. I hope you enjoy the recipes listed here.
