As I mentioned in my last post, Roasted Tomatillo Salsa Verde, I have a thing for fall and everything it brings, from comfort food to tailgating grub. While I am not quite ready for the chill of winter, I relish the feeling of my husband pulling the extra blanket over top of us in the middle of the night. Most mornings, we sit outside drinking our cups of coffee and tea, steam curling from the hot liquids as we wrap our hands around the mugs to keep our fingers warm. We watch the hummingbirds whiz back and forth between the feeder and the trumpet vine, dodging each other at top speed. This morning, as the clouds of the impending thunderstorm rolled over the mountains, we had one lone hummingbird visitor. We felt certain he came to say good-bye on behalf of his brothers and sisters before embarking on the long journey south.
As a celebration of our summer – traveling adventures, days at the pool and bike rides to the park – we cooked up a backyard barbecue feast that included some of our favorites. Grilled Tri-Tip Steak with Molasses Chili Marinade was the star of the show, with a blue potato salad, fresh corn and sweet watermelon acting as sidekicks. The only thing we were missing was a sugar cone filled with Almond Joy Chocolate & Coconut Ice Cream.
As we move into fall, I have my mind on other dishes. Easy comfort foods, such as soups and sandwiches, and tailgating food, from dips to quesadillas, rule the menu.
